How Safe Is Your Cosmetics/Body Care Products?

How do you know if your cosmetic is safe? According to the FDA, a cosmetic is anything used for "cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance."  The average American is exposed to 126 cosmetic chemicals everyday and I bet there is some sort of price to pay for this.

We constantly lather, powder, spray, etc. The skin is the body's largest organ and its shield against the surrounding environment. But it is a porous protector, allowing some substances in and others—most notably moisture—out.  And almost any solvent applied on the skin gets absorbed into the body.  No wonder cancer rates have increased and we are now a nation in an epidemic war. America is constantly battling diseases even with the presence of advance technologies and scientist with white collar lab coats.

Basic H2 Cleaning Product and Get Clean Detergent Review + Giveaway

At SHHM, we love to make you and your families feel safe after leaving our blog. My post about Spring Cleaning got everyone saying, wow, that's lovely but I don't think I have the time to get all that done. And I really wanted to help, so I went in search of a product that was functional, do-it-all cleaning agent that will help mothers like myself tackle the everyday cleaning without breaking budgets or purchasing multiple cleaning products to get the job done.

If you have young children, this product is super safe to have around the house. It is non-toxic and natural. It doesn't disperse toxic fumes, which is also beneficial for our environment. Most cleaning agents have toxic chemicals, which can be harmful if you breathe or swallow it. Many cleaning agents have an ingredient called morpholine, which can cause kidney and liver damage. Another example is that window cleaners often have ammonia, which can cause irritation to the eyes and skin.

Furniture, mirrors, windows, bathroom, living rooms, and other common entities of your home can be transformed into something clean, and beautiful with just a few simple changes and a new cleaning product at SHHM. Basic H2 Organic Super Cleaning Concentrate is perfect for getting your toilet bowl, furniture, mirrors and kitchen clean again.

SHHM Guide on Pregnancy

Expecting a baby? Or contemplating pregnancy? Then, this is for you. At Safe Home Happy Mom, we are all about safe living, and that involves your unborn child as well. Now is the time to start thinking about ways to keep your unborn child safe, chemical-free and reduce his/her exposure to toxins. According to the Environmental Working Group, "The human race is now polluted with hundreds of industrial chemicals – with little or no understanding of the consequences. Babies are born pre-polluted with as many as 300 industrial chemicals in their bodies when they enter the world."

Zehn Natural Tee Tshirt Review + Giveaway

I had the opportunity to review Zehn natural organic apparel with a mission, and I was clearly not disappointed. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I am very skeptical when it comes to reviewing organic products because for some reason I feel like the companies put much thoughts into the organic aspect of the product as opposed to the functionality. Wrong, wrong and wrong. I am ashamed.

I tried Zehn organic Tshirt (Love, Peace, Freedom inscriptions). Now, this is the only fitted Tshirt I own, and that is not a PR line, it is absolute fact. I was completely shocked by the feel of it, it felt so clean, serene and yet chic. I have never felt so good wearing a tshirt.

Easy LunchBoxes Review + Giveaway (***CLOSED***)

Entries - #320 Comment
Winner - #240
Thanks for entering!!! Congratulations Moms of Dolls of 3, i'm sure your daughters will love them.

Oh, how I love to package my food, I mean, I get out of the house as early as 7:30am and I am not back until around 4:30pm. And because I am on a mission to lose some few pounds, I refuse to eat junk outside, and I am weary of taking my lunch with me if I have to pack three or four different containers. And believe me bad things always happen to me. I once had my rice and pepper chicken spill into my lovely nine west handbag, and since then, I would rather live on coffee during lunch or keep an empty stomach. But all that was history just two weeks ago, as I approached Kelly Lester about her Easy Lunchboxes that I see everywhere on the blogosphere and internet, and I was dying to try them. She was warm and nice of course, and just few days later, I got my very own EasyLunch Box System.

Safe Baby Week: Body Bath Products

There are many products out there available to your child to wash and moisturize but how many of them is actually safe, chemical free and soothing to your child. What do I look for in these products, I look for ingredients that are not harmful to your child, ingredients that properly moisturize and I have categorized them based on price and 100% natural to eco-friendly.

Safe Baby Week: ECOSTORE USA REVIEW + $25 Gift Card GIVEAWAY!!!

Make No Nasty Chemicals part of your everyday life! Yes, no more nasty, our kids are counting on us to do what is right. I had an opportunity to review Ecostore USA Baby Shampoo and Baby Body Wash, and I must say, it was one of the best experience I’ve had with eco-friendly baby products. I don’t know why I always think that some eco-friendly companies just throw some natural stuff together and call it eco-friendly but it doesn’t actually do the job. Ecostore USA is a company that walks the talk. The product is not only plant based, it also cleans up well.

Safe Baby Week: What's on Your Baby's Skin? + Best Comment Giveaway!

On this subject I am no pro either (my 5 years of studying chemicals and its engineering is such a waste maybe?), so I will really appreciate your insights as well. What are the best fabric to dress baby in? Cotton, wool or silk? Conventional cotton one of the crops most heavily treated with pesticides and even treated with formaldehyde by engineers in advanced countries, a known carcinogen. Only wool from organically reared sheep is guaranteed to have not been dipped in organophosphates.

Safe Baby Week: Zutano Itzy Bitzy Review + $75 Gift Card Giveaway (***CLOSED***)

I have always eyed the quality, visual and beautiful clothing on Zutano. I am one of those people that would go online and just go through clothes I wish I could get other than those I get at the stores. And sometimes I do but was I tickled, when I got a pair of gorgeous Zutano wears for my one year old daughter? Oh yeah. It was a great moment for me. I couldn’t wait to feel the texture, and try it on her. And I am here to tell you the God honest truth. The colors are bold, the design is just gorgeous, the fittings are just about what is right for a baby. The design we got was the BB-gators design, and as if they new, I am a Gator!!! For those who don’t know, I am a graduate of the University of Florida, and I am part of the Gator Nation! Woo hoo!!! Ok, I digress.

Is Your Baby's Sling Safe (Important Warning)

I just woke up five minutes ago, brushed my teeth, washed my face and turned on my laptop and to my greatest horror, there is another death for Baby Slings.

Right off the bat, I am not a fan of baby carriers, slings, baby mocks, except car seats which are necessary and compulsory. So here is the recall piece from the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. Please if you have one of this, I recommend being careful or throw it away. Your child's life is worth more than whatever amount of dollars you paid for it.

Food Safety - Fats and Oil; Simple Solutions

Fats and Oil are important group of food in our diet. The primary safety concern regarding fats and oils are pesticide residue since pesticides are stored in the oils of plants and the fats of animals. There is need to separate oil concentrates from residues of antibiotics, hormones, tranquilizers and other chemicals used in milk production.

Safe Mom Solutions:
Best bet again is to go organic!
Another option is to opt for olive/virgin/extra virgin oils since these are solvent extracted from fruit pulps.

Food Safety - Meat, Poultry, and Eggs; Simple Solutions

Meat
Most meat sold in the U.S come from cattle (beef), calves (veal), hogs (ham, pork and bacon), sheep (mutton), and young sheep (lamb). Meat and meat products are available in several forms such as fresh, frozen, cured, smoked, dried and canned. The greatest source of contamination for meat comes from their feeds. Farmers want to feed their animals cheap and growth stimulating chemicals which are likely to leave residue in the animal. Commercial feeds that animals feed on may contain  growth hormones like I mentioned earlier, coloring agents, fungicides and pesticides, drugs and medicines to treat diseases, and flavoring agents to make the feed more appealing to animals.

Food Safety – Fish and Seafood; Simple Solutions

Seafoods generally contain high level of water pollution contaminants from the sea. Two pollutants of great concern to doctors and health providers are toxic mercury and carcinogenic PCBs. Radioactive materials are also found in fish and seafood harvested near marine dump sites or oil producing areas.
Seafood is a highly perishable product, hence chemical preservatives are added to seafood to keep it fresh and clean. Common chemicals that can be found are Sodium Benzoate, Sulfites, Polyphospates, etc. These chemicals prevent the breakdown of amino acids into biogenic amines and ammonia.

Food Safety – Simple Solutions

I know I talked so much last week about starting this month’s theme on food safety and I was unable to fulfill that promise due to loads of school work. Sucks when you are working on this engineering design classes. But I had more time to do my research, so don’t worry, I will be giving you all the tips to staying healthy and keeping your food safe. I tend to use scientific terms, but I will try to limit that and if I do use it, I will explain what it means to you.

PaperMate Review Party

Papermate Biodegradable Pencil
Papermate is a company that manufactures writing materials, which includes pens, pencils, papers, notepads, etc. I had the opportunity to review some Papermate product last week and it was just lovely. I am not too specific as to what type of pen I use, however using the Papermate Biodegradable pencil this weekend, with an ergonomic grip, for the reduced writing fatigue produced by its grip to the hand and also a greener solution, I knew I would have to keep one with me everywhere I go.
It definitely was a smooth writing experience.

Papermate Silhouette -

The Papermate Silhouette is very functional. As a chemical engineer, I love functionality. Not only is it pretty, it is very comforting. Shaped like an hourglass, so your grip is well positioned and relaxed while writing. Another cool feature is the fact that you click for more pen on the sides, as opposed to the end of the pen, for uninterrupted writing. They have it available in 0.5mm and 0.7mm, so if you ever want to buy this for your toddler or teenager, its very functional.

*I received a sample product from Papermate and did not recieve any form of financial proceeds.
